Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2026 release wave 2, also called v29 or update 29.0, reaches general availability in the first week of October 2026. Public preview opened in early September 2026 in sandbox environments only. For distributors, the headline changes are direct transfer orders from warehouse-enabled locations, EDI through E-Documents using the Peppol BIS 3 standard and expanded Shopify B2B support. For manufacturers, the headline changes are routing instructions that carry into subcontracting purchase orders, quality inspections that auto-fill passed and failed quantities and released production orders created straight from the Planning Worksheet. A new table extension data model also delivers a platform-wide performance gain.
Key takeaways
- General availability lands the first week of October 2026. Your production environment becomes eligible about a week later.
- You control when the update runs. The October release stays schedulable until early March 2027.
- Preview sandboxes carry demo data only and get deleted 30 days after GA.
- Distribution wins: multi-site transfers, Peppol EDI, Shopify B2B, HS code sync.
- Manufacturing wins: subcontracting, quality inspections, planning worksheet, capacity calendars.
- Every environment gets faster. Table extension fields now live in the base table, which removes joins.
When does Business Central 2026 release wave 2 go live?
Microsoft ships two major updates a year, in April and October. The v29 calendar gives you a one month preview, then a five month window in which you pick your own update date.
One detail the timeline does not show. v29 becomes available as an update to your existing environments about a week after general availability, not on day one. And your maintenance window controls the hours the update can actually run, so set it in the Business Central admin center before October. Otherwise the update can land in the middle of a shipping day.
What every Business Central customer gets in v29
The Payables Agent gets better at matching
The Payables Agent now matches purchase orders using line level amounts and expected receipt dates, not just header values. It also respects your Receipt on Invoice settings when it finalizes a draft. If you tested the agent in wave 1 and pulled back because the matches were too loose, this is the release to retest it in.
EDI moves inside E-Documents
You can now exchange EDI orders and payments through the E-Documents framework using the Peppol BIS 3 standard. No custom integration layer required for partners who support it. This is a real change for anyone still paying per document through a legacy VAN. It does not replace a full EDI provider for retail trading partners with proprietary maps, so read our breakdown of EDI integration for Business Central distributors before you assume it covers your customer requirements.
One Copilot chat, one place
The Copilot chat experience in Business Central now matches the wider Microsoft Copilot interface and reasons across your business data, web results and general knowledge in the same conversation. Agent work also gets a review bar, so documents waiting on a human show up directly in lists rather than hiding in a queue.
Report Packs
Define a set of financial reports once, run them as a single unit and get one PDF out. Schedule the pack to a report inbox or straight to email. If your controller rebuilds the same month-end bundle by hand every period, this pays for itself immediately.
A quiet performance win
Fields from a base table and its extensions now store in the same database table instead of separate extension tables. That removes joins the database used to run on nearly every read. You do not configure anything. You just get faster pages, faster reports and faster queries, and the effect grows with how many extensions you run.
What wholesale distributors get in v29
Direct transfer orders from warehouse-enabled locations
This is the one to circle. Source locations that require inventory picks or warehouse shipments can finally use direct transfer orders. Until now, direct transfers were blocked at warehouse-enabled locations, which forced multi-site distributors into full in-transit transfer orders or manual workarounds for simple moves between their own buildings.
Shopify B2B catalogs and pricing
Manage B2B companies in Shopify from Business Central, map company tax identifiers, run B2B catalogs separately from your retail catalog and control price synchronization based on your Shopify plan. If you sell to both dealers and consumers off one storefront, this closes a gap you have probably been scripting around.
HS codes and country of origin sync
Turn on the Sync HS Code and Country of Origin toggles on the Shopify Shop Card and tariff numbers plus country of origin flow with your product sync. With tariff exposure where it is right now, accurate customs data at the item level is not a nice to have.
What manufacturers get in v29
Routing instructions reach your subcontractors
Routing comments and attachments now carry from the production routing into the generated subcontracting purchase order. Your subcontractor sees the operation instructions without anyone rekeying them or emailing a PDF on the side. Pair this with the new assisted setup, which configures subcontracting using Contoso demo data so you can see a working model before you touch your own data.
Quality inspections stop fighting you
Completing an inspection auto-fills the passed and failed quantity fields. Posting errors are actionable, so a blocked posting takes you straight to the inspection holding it up instead of leaving you to hunt. Editing an inspection also prompts to assign it to you, which kills the ambiguity about who owns an open inspection. We covered the foundation in our post on Business Central quality management and subcontracting.
Released production orders from the Planning Worksheet
The Planning Worksheet now creates released production orders directly. You can also monitor and update capacity calendars from the worksheet and open production BOMs and routings straight from actionable errors. Fewer clicks between a plan and a job on the floor. If you are still running reorder points and wondering when to move to planning, start with our guide to the Business Central reordering policy.
Subcontracting in basic warehouse
Basic warehouse configurations now support inventory put-aways and picks for subcontracting alongside normal inbound and outbound activity. Smaller shops get subcontracting flows without turning on advanced warehousing and everything that comes with it.
v29 at a glance: distribution vs manufacturing
| Area | Wholesale distribution | Discrete manufacturing |

| Biggest single change | Direct transfer orders from warehouse-enabled locations | Routing instructions carried into subcontracting POs |
| Warehouse | Warehouse-enabled source locations join direct transfer workflows | Put-aways and picks for subcontracting in basic warehouse |
| Planning | No planning-specific changes | Released production orders from the Planning Worksheet, capacity calendar monitoring |
| Quality | Inspection improvements apply to inbound receiving | Auto-filled pass and fail quantities, actionable posting errors |
| Commerce and trade | Shopify B2B catalogs and pricing, HS code and country of origin sync | Limited direct impact |

What to do before your October update window
- Create a 29.0 preview sandbox now. Preview closes in early October and the environment disappears in early November. Use it to see the features, not to test your data.
- Check your ISV add-ons. Ask every publisher you run for a v29-compatible version and a date. Warehouse, EDI, shipping and tax add-ons are the usual holdups.
- Review custom AL extensions. The table extension data model change is a platform-level shift. Have your partner or developer validate your extensions against 29.0 rather than assuming they carry forward.
- Set your maintenance window. Confirm it in the admin center so the update runs overnight and not during picking.
- Test on real data after GA. Once v29 is generally available, copy production into a sandbox, run your critical scenarios and then schedule production. Preview sandboxes cannot hold your production data.
- Pick your date. You have until early March 2027. Waiting a few weeks past GA is normal and sensible. Waiting until the grace period is not.
Frequently asked questions
What version number is Business Central 2026 release wave 2?
Version 29, referred to as v29, BC29 or update 29.0. It follows Business Central 2026 release wave 1, which was version 28.
When is Business Central v29 generally available?
The first week of October 2026. Public preview ran from early September 2026 through early October 2026 in sandbox environments only.
Do I have to update in October?
No. The update becomes available to your environment about a week after general availability and you can schedule it to any date through early March 2027. March 2027 is the grace period, after which you can no longer push the date out.
Can I test v29 with my own company data before it ships?
Not during preview. Preview environments run demo data only. Once v29 is generally available, copy your production environment into a sandbox and test there before you schedule the production update.
What does v29 change for warehouse operations?
Two things. Source locations that require inventory picks or warehouse shipments can now use direct transfer orders, which unblocks simple site-to-site moves for distributors. And basic warehouse configurations now support inventory put-aways and picks for subcontracting, which lets smaller manufacturers run subcontracting without enabling advanced warehousing.
Will v29 break my customizations?
It should not, but the new table extension data model is a genuine platform change and deserves a real test rather than an assumption. Validate every custom extension and ISV add-on on 29.0 before you schedule your production update. Extensions that cause an update to fail can be uninstalled automatically during the enforced update period, though your data stays in the environment and comes back once a compatible version is installed.
How does v29 relate to the 2026 Capabilities Guide?
The Capabilities Guide describes where Microsoft is taking the product. A release wave delivers a specific slice of it on a specific date. We compared the 2025 and 2026 editions in Business Central Capabilities Guide 2026: What Changed.
Not sure which v29 features apply to you?
Every release wave ships more than any one company needs. The question worth answering is which handful of changes actually move your operation, and what has to be true in your setup before they work.
Our team has implemented Business Central for wholesale distributors and manufacturers across the USA since the Navision days. We will walk your processes, map the v29 changes that matter to you and tell you plainly which ones do not.
